How Do I Know Which Program Is Right for My Child?
Choosing the right program depends on a few key factors:
-
Your child’s age and ability to focus during a structured lesson
-
Their prior skating experience and current comfort level on the ice
❯ Pre- school age
The PreCanskate program is designed for children aged 3–6 with little to no skating experience. Skaters participate in small group lessons focused on fundamental skills such as pushing and gliding. While parents are not required to be on the ice, they must remain present for the entire session, watching from the stands or lobby. Once a child has successfully completed all three levels of PreCanskate, they may advance to the Canskate program, regardless of their age.
❯ School-aged youth
If your child is 5 years or older and has little to no skating experience but wants to learn, the Canskate program is an ideal choice. This program teaches fundamental skating skills through fun, interactive group lessons. Children progress through six stages at their own pace. Completing the program can prepare them for either hockey or figure skating.
❯ Adult/Teen
For teenagers aged 13 and up, as well as adults with little to no skating experience, we offer a Teen/Adult program based on the CanSkate curriculum. This program focuses on fundamental skating skills and is a great way to stay active during the winter. Former figure skaters are also welcome to join!
❯Pre-Star
Children who have built foundational skating skills through the CanSkate program and demonstrate interest and potential in figure skating may be invited to join the PRE-STAR Program. Eligibility requires completion of Stage 3 in CanSkate.

❯ Equipment Requirements for All Skaters
All skaters must bring their own hockey or figure skates (lace-up only) and a CSA-approved hockey helmet with a face cage. Bike helmets are not permitted. Skaters are also responsible for wearing warm clothing and gloves or mittens while on the ice. Please note: The Flamboro Skating Club does not provide equipment or offer rentals at any time, for any reason. Helmets must be in good condition, properly fitted, and free of damage or missing parts. No exceptions will be made to this policy. Skaters who arrive without the required equipment will not be permitted on the ice.
❯ Skating Lesson Prep Guide
Before your lessons begin, there are a few important things to do to ensure you're ready for the ice. First, make sure your skates are sharpened—this helps with control and safety. Check that your helmet fits properly and securely. Be sure to pack mittens or gloves to keep your hands warm and protected during the lesson. It’s also a good idea to bring a small cloth or rag to wipe down your skate blades after class to prevent rusting. If you’re new to skating, practice putting on and tying your skates at home. If you need assistance, we have a video tutorial available that shows you how to tie skates properly.
❯ First Day of Lessons
Please arrive early, as the first day tends to be busy and there may be a line at the check-in table. Visit the Learn to Skate table to collect your child’s name tag. Once you have your tags, head to the dressing rooms. Once ready, skaters should wait at the rink door until a coach or Program Assistant (PA) welcomes them onto the ice.
❯ Parent Reminders
We ask that all parents remain in the arena during the lesson. You’re welcome to watch from the stadium seating or from the viewing area in the lobby. Please avoid using the players’ benches or the penalty box, as these areas are reserved for coaching equipment and first aid needs. During the first few lessons, your child may be moved between groups as coaches assess each skater to ensure they are grouped according to skill level. When the session ends, please collect your child at the opposite end of the rink from where you dropped them off.
